Cosmetology License Requirements in Tennessee

The Tennessee Board of Cosmetology was established in 1939 and oversees more than 150 private, public, vocational and correctional schools; 45,000 cosmetologists, manicurists and estheticians; and 8,000 cosmetology shops. The Tennessee Board of Cosmetology issues licenses to people wishing to practice cosmetology in the state. Cosmetologists, cosmetology instructors, natural hair stylists, shampoo technicians, estheticians and manicurists must have valid licenses to do business in the state.

Oversight

There are nine members of the Tennessee Board of Cosmetology--five cosmetologists, one cosmetology instructor, a school owner, education member and member of the public.

Requirements

All licensed cosmetologists in Tennessee must meet all education requirements, pass an exam and be at least 16 years old.

Education

Individuals are required to have completed at least 1,500 hours of education in theory and practice before they can take the Tennessee cosmetology licensing exam.

Exam

The cosmetology licensing exam in Tennessee contains practical and theoretical sections. Individuals must pass both sections to apply for a license.

Continuing Education

Cosmetology instructors in Tennessee are required to complete at least 16 hours of continuing education every two years to maintain their license.

Reciprocity

Cosmetologists, nail technicians and others who meet minimum education requirements and have a valid cosmetology license in another state can get a Tennessee cosmetology license without taking an exam.
