What Kind of Houses Did the Apache Live In?

The Apache tribe is known for being a group of wanderers. Due to their wandering lifestyle they did not construct elaborate or permanent homes. They also possessed very little furniture.

    Types

  1. A rounded wigwam is the best-known type of Apache home. A wigwam was constructed with wooden poles and grasses.
  2. Features

  3. Most Apache homes had only beds with crude grass mattresses. Sometimes the flooring would be lined with grass as well.
  4. Geography

  5. The Apache people settled in the southwestern areas of the United States during the 1500s.
  6. History

  7. The Apache people are known as hunters and gatherers. They did not rely on farming because of the arid area in which they lived. When it was necessary to move due to food supply or weather, they relocated to a new area.
  8. Function

  9. The men spent their time hunting and the women were responsible for building and maintaining the houses.
  10. Effects

  11. Today, the Apache people who still live in the southwestern area of the United states earn income from tourism and casinos. They do not live in their traditional Apache homes any longer.
