While composite decking is made from recycled materials, is generally resistant to insects and requires less maintenance than traditional wood decks, there are some problems that you should be aware of when considering this type of decking for your house. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • Composite decking is made from a combination of wood fibers, saw dust and recycled plastic.

    Too Hot

    • Composite decks are made partially of plastic, which can make them hot in the summer sun.

    Mold

    • Composite decks are susceptible to mold, particularly in any cracks that may appear. The mold has to be cleaned with chemicals and a stiff brush.

    Discoloration

    • Composite decks can become faded in the sun, and can be discolored by food and drink spills.

    Cost

    • Composite decks cost more than wood decks--in some cases a quarter to a third more.
