Hair analysis is becoming increasingly popular among businesses and public agencies for pre-employment drug testing. State and federal courts have also relied on hair drug testing to monitor adherence to drug diversion programs and as a condition of probation or parole.

  1. Best Test

    • A hair drug test can chart a drug use history further back than blood, urine or saliva tests.

    Requirements

    • Laboratories need at least 50 strands of 1 ¼-inch length of hair from the crown of the head to conduct a drug test.

    No Free Passes

    • If a person tested is bald or has a shaved head, body hair from the chest, armpits or legs can be used, while employment can be denied if no hair is available.

    Length of Drug Use

    • For each 1/2-inch of hair, 30 days of drug use can be detected, with longer hair providing a drug history of up to two years.

    Expensive

    • It takes approximately 10 days to perform a hair drug test, costing about $100 for each analysis.

    At Home

    • Home hair drug tests are available to monitor abstinence or drug or alcohol abuse among children or for prospective job applicants.
