What Are Bay Windows?
Bay windows can be one of the most distinctive features in a home. They give an added dimension to the outside of the home, and make the interior look and feel larger.

Definition
-
A bay window extends out from the sides of the house, creating additional space in the room that is equal to the depth of the window.
History
-
Bay windows go back to the Victorian homes of the late nineteenth century. The turrets of a Victorian house are actually bay windows right above each other on successive floors.
-
Shapes
-
A bay window can be a square or polygon, and can be set at an interior angle of 90, 135 or 150 degrees.
Advantages
-
Bay windows let in more light than traditional casement windows. They also give a wider view. The main window cannot be opened, but the side ones can, and you can get a breeze from two directions.
Uses
-
In Victorian homes, bay windows can be found in just about any room. In more modern homes, they are usually found in living rooms. A small bay window is also popular above a sink in the kitchen.
