Sciatic Nerve Pain in Pregnancy

Sciatic nerve pain, or Sciatica, is a common discomfort during the late stages of pregnancy. According to the American Pregnancy Association, "The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, providing sensory and motor function to the lower extremities. This nerve provides sensation to the back of the thigh, lower part of the leg and the sole of the foot."

    Symptoms

  1. Sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy causes pain in the legs that can come and go. The pain can also stick around for extended periods of time and interfere with your ability to function throughout the day.
  2. Cause

  3. Sciatic nerve pain is caused when a growing baby puts pressure on the nerves under the uterus.
  4. Relief

  5. Sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy can be relieved by lying on your side, avoiding excessive standing, using heat on the affected area, and propping your feet up with pillows.
  6. After Childbirth

  7. Sciatic nerve pain that's caused by pregnancy usually disappears after the baby is born.
  8. See a Doctor

  9. If sciatic pain during pregnancy is frequent and severe, contact your doctor.
