- There are good fats and bad fats. Saturated fats and trans fats are bad, and they are not allowed. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are allowed.
- Sodium causes the body to retain water, which can increase blood pressure. It is restricted on the diet.
- The cardiac diet prohibits drinks containing caffeine. Some examples are coffee, soft drinks, teas and energy drinks.
- Fiber is also promoted on the diet for its ability to lower cholesterol levels. Fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains are recommended sources of fiber.
- One last component of the diet is making sure to keep portion sizes under control.
