Geriatric Physical Therapy Equipment

Many of the same equipment pieces and rehabilitation tools are used for older patients as are utilized for the general population. Geriatric therapists focus more on aging-related disorders and will have equipment geared more toward treating arthritis, knee and hip replacements and balance issues.

Ramps

Ramps with bars are used for geriatric patients to work on walking and balancing. The physical therapist often holds the older patients by a belt tied around the patient's waist to assist with stability.

Straps

Rubber straps in varying degrees of tightness are used by physical therapists to provide stretching resistance exercises. Straps are often recommended devices that older patients purchase for continued use at home.

Tables

Massage tables and padded treatment tables that are adjustable and can accommodate patients using walkers or in wheelchairs are commonly used in physical therapy when the patient requires hands-on treatments and examinations.

Weights

Geriatric patients are encouraged to add weight lifting to their regular exercise routines. Small hand weights are an integral part of the physical therapist's toolkit.

Assistive Devices

Most physical therapists carry a line of canes and walkers and instruct patients on their proper use.

Water

Water therapy is a popular low-impact physical therapy modality for seniors. Many physical therapists rely on small pools to work with their geriatric clients.
