What Generic Medications Are Used for ADD?

Attention deficit disorder is often treated with medication. Although newer medications for ADD frequently enter the market, there are also several older types that are available in generic form. The newer options have benefits such as long-term action or fewer side effects, but the generics are still used because of their effectiveness and lower cost.

  1. Definition

    • ADD is a disorder characterized by such traits as hyperactivity and an inability to focus and pay attention for a normal length of time. Although the exact cause is not known, doctors suspect that there is a biological basis.

    Treatment

    • According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, at least 80 percent of youngsters who are diagnosed with ADD will respond positively when treated with stimulant medication. However, it may take some trial and error to discover which medication is most effective in a particular child. If the generic medications don't work, brand-name treatments can be tried.

    Types

    • There are three types of generic stimulant medication available to treat ADD. They are the short-acting form of Ritalin, Adderal and Dexedrine. Many name brand treatments, such as Concerta and Daytrana, are actually just variants of Ritalin with a longer effect or a different delivery method.

    Other Options

    • When stimulant medication doesn't work for ADD, some doctors will try antidepressants. The most common generic antidepressant options are imipramine, desipramine, bupropion (Wellbutrin) and clonidine.

    Side Effects

    • Both generic and name-brand ADD medications can have side effects. These most commonly include headaches, decreased desire to eat, stomachaches and difficulty falling asleep. If the side effects are bothersome, the dose can usually be reduced or a different medication can be tried.
