Is a Colon Cleanse Dangerous?

Colon cleansing is the process of cleaning out the colon through an irrigation enema or taking oral supplements. Advocates say that this process is necessary to remove waste material that collects in the colon and can have a detrimental effect on a person's health. However, this is not scientifically proven and there are some dangers that can result from a colon cleanse.

  1. Misconceptions

    • Advocates of colon cleansing claim that the colon can become clogged with old waste matter. They say that several pounds of fecal matter and mucus can build up on the colon walls. The My Optum Health website says there is no scientific backing for this belief, as the colon continually cleans itself by shedding old cells.

    Function

    • A normally functioning colon maintains a proper balance of natural chemicals and beneficial bacteria that support the digestive process. According to My Optum Health, a colon cleanse can actually disturb the balance and interfere with proper digestion.

    Side Effects

    • A colon cleanse done through colonic irrigation can cause a person to absorb too much water. This can result in side effects such as nausea, vomiting and fluid in the lungs. In extreme cases, it can lead to heart failure or break the colon wall, which is fatal.

    Warning

    • If a colon cleanse is done through colonic irrigation and the equipment has not been properly cleaned, it can cause a bacterial infection. If the cleansing process is done through a dietary supplement, there is no assurance that the supplement is safe or effective. Colon cleanse pills are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration or required to have proof of their effectiveness.

    Benefits

    • Advocates of colon cleansing say that it benefits digestion and overall health and can help prevent colon cancer. However, the National Cancer Institute says the best ways to prevent colon cancer are regular screenings, eating a fiber-rich diet and exercising regularly.
