What Is a Bass Drum Trigger?
A drum trigger is a specialized device used by performers to ensure consistent, quality sound during their performance. A trigger on a bass drum ensures that a drummer playing a complex song gets the right sound level.
-
The Drum
-
A trigger is typically used on an acoustic drum; typically, a bass or kick drum.
The Trigger
-
The trigger is an electronic device that attaches directly to the bass drum. It is used to send a MIDI signal to the sound board when the drum is hit.
-
The Sound Board
-
The sound board receives the MIDI signal from the trigger, processes it and sends it to an output. The output from the sound board goes to a PA system that controls the speakers. The sound of the drum comes out of the speakers at the preset volume.
Significance
-
Using the trigger, the drummer will get a consistent sound, regardless of how hard or soft the drum is hit by the kick pedal. This is particularly important if the song requires a lot of double-pedaling, or is a longer, more physically demanding song.
Considerations
-
The drummer will still display their performance talents, but a trigger allows for a variations in striking power without automating instrument play.
