Benefits of Being U.S. Border Patrol

Since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, there has been an added emphasis on border security. Additionally, with the war on drugs in Mexico, which has led to fighting in the streets of several cities near the border, there's a bigger need for U.S. Customs and Border Protection than ever.

  1. Salary

    • The annual salary of a border patrol officer starts between $36,658 and $46,542.

    Overtime

    • There are plenty of opportunity for overtime pay, as there is in any law enforcement agency. Overtime pay is anywhere from an extra 10 percent to 25 percent, in addition to nighttime differentials that might be paid to the officer.

    Leave

    • Border patrol officers get 13 to 26 days of paid leave per year, depending on service. There are also 13 sick-leave days each year that roll over to the next year if not used.

    Uniform Allowance

    • Border patrol officers have a uniform allowance of $1,500 per year.

    Other Benefits

    • Officers receive life insurance, health insurance, retirement benefits and a thrift-saving plan, likened to a 401k.
