Definition of a Migraine Headache

According to the Mayo Clinic, migraines are headaches that often become debilitating, with severe symptoms of throbbing pain and warning sensory aura. Sufferers may exhibit a painful tingling or see flashes of light, which will only lessen by lying down in a dark, quiet room.

  1. The Pain

    • According to the Cleveland Clinic, migraine pain is often throbbing or pounding, and may begin at one side of the head and the shift to another side, or it may affect the entire head. The pain may vary in severity, and the migraine may last only a few hours to several days.

    Other Symptoms

    • The Cleveland Clinic states that migraine sufferers often are sensitive to bright lights and strong odors, especially during an episode. Sufferers may also experience a loss of appetite, feel dizzy and nauseous and be extremely fatigued.

    Warning Signs (Aura)

    • Some sufferers will experience an aura around 30 minutes before their migraine, signaling that one is coming. They may see flashes of sparkly lights or experience blurred vision. They may also feel tingly or prickly sensations on their limbs.

    Causes

    • According the Cleveland Clinic, emotional stress remains one of main triggers for migraines because during a stressful time, chemicals are released to fix the situation (the fight or flight response). The release of the chemicals can aggravate a migraine.

    Risk Factors

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, migraines often are hereditary. They also state that women suffer from migraines three times more than men.
