Education

The level of education plays the largest factor in determining the salary of an auto mechanic. Based on education and experience, there are three levels of auto mechanics.

Low Level

A Level 1 auto mechanic can expect a yearly income of between $28,000 and $38,000, with some mechanics making as much as $43,000.

Midlevel

With post-high-school training, a Level 2 mechanic averages between $40,000 and $53,000 annually, with 10 percent bringing in $60,000.

High Level

Several years of job training and continuing education will yield an average salary of between $43,000 and $57,000 annually for Level 3 mechanics.

Geography

The range in salaries for each level is based on the geographic location of the mechanic. Those employed in high-transit areas such as California have a higher pay than those in areas such as Alaska.
