What are the Signs of a Water Heater Going Bad?

Water heaters--like anything electrical--will begin to go bad once they have been in service a long time or are past their guarantee date. Parts start to wear out and go bad---water tasks around the house become difficult to complete due to lack of hot water. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Effects

    • You may be in a nice hot shower one minute and a stone cold shower the next. A booster element located at the top of the water tank may be all that's keeping your water warm after the lower element fails.

    Significance

    • The breaker on the electrical circuit your hot water heater is on keeps tripping for no apparent reason.

    Time Frame

    • The length of time taken for the water to heat up becomes gradually longer until the water is only tepid.

    Function

    • The thermostat no longer controls the temperature of your water heater and is not working. The water temperatures in your faucets randomly run hot and cold at will.

    Identification

    • The water heater no longer has any warmth to the touch and remains cold. Silence at the water tank indicates the elements are no longer working or something electrical has gone awry.
