Is your cat overweight? Cats who are overweight, like humans, typically have more health problems than their healthier counterparts. So, how do you tell if your cat has a problem?

    Healthy Cats

  1. Healthy cats can weigh anywhere from 5 to 20 pounds depending on the type of cat. If your cat has lost its sleekness and appears overweight, chances are it probably is.
  2. Breed

  3. One of the biggest factors in determining a cat's healthy weight is the breed. Large cats, like the Maine Coon, can weigh 18 pounds without ever being overweight. Yet, for smaller breeds, like the Singapura, a mere 7 pounds can be too much.
  4. Sex

  5. A male of any given breed of cat usually weighs 2 to 4 pounds more than a female of the same breed. This is normal and should not be considered a weight issue.
  6. Neutered Cats

  7. Although they often do, neutered cats should not gain weight after the procedure has been done. If your cat begins to gain weight after being neutered, check its caloric intake. Cats who have been neutered need about a third less calories than non-neutered cats.
  8. Weight Loss

  9. If your cat is overweight, schedule a visit with your veterinarian to discuss a plan of action and weight loss plan for your feline companion. Helping your cat to lose the weight now can save you in veterinary bills later.
