- A combination square is a straightedge with ruled measurements and consists of multiple, interchangeable heads that can be attached. Each one performs a different function.
- One of these attachments allows the combination square to measure accurate angles. Usually, it measures only 90- or 45-degree angles, though some allow a full range of multiple angles.
- The ruler is used to measure distances in millimeters, centimeters and inches. It's also used to determine the flat face side of a wooden board.
- Combination squares also act as protractors. These allows for perfect circles or curves to be marked before a piece of wood or metal is cut.
- The protractor and the angle attachments contain levels. These help ensure that a piece of wood or metal is level before being worked on.
