Symptoms of Scabies Mites

Scabies mites gets its name from the Latin word for itch or scratch, which is apt as the common nickname for the disease is "the itch." The scabies disease is highly contagious and spread by mites underneath the fingernails by itching and scratching.

  1. S-Shaped Skin Patches

    • The movement of the mites underneath the skin leaves small s-shaped paths that show through the skin.

    Superficial Burrows

    • Burrows caused by the movements of the mites underneath the skin can be seen. These burrows are more noticeable than the smaller s-shaped patches on the skin. The burrows can be up to an inch in length.

    Itching

    • Mites moving under the skin cause ripples along the outer layer of the skin and cause itching.

    Blisters

    • Insect-like bites fill with liquid and create blisters. The liquid will fill until the blister pops.

    Sores

    • Liquid-filled pockets under the skin caused by mite bites create sores on the hands and bottom of the foot after the liquid causes the skin to rupture.

    Scaly Skin

    • Mites are a parasite that feeds off the liquids and resources of the organism. In the case of humans, the mites will feed on bodily fluids, leaving dry patches of scaly skin.
