Originally, the Fairmont Miramar was the very prestigious home of former Nevada senator, John P. Jones. He made his riches as a silver miner in the late 1800s.

Even while Jones resided in the elaborate mansion situated on the corner of Ocean Park and Wilshire in the heart of Santa Monica, visitors travelled from across the world and stayed at his fortress.

In 1912, Jones sold his mansion to the Gillette family, heirs to the famous razor fortune. The estate sold again in 1921 to Gilbert Stevenson. Stevenson made some fancy changes to accommodate the roaring twenties and it did not take long for the seaside hotel to flourish.

Just some of the elite that fancied the Fairmont were John F. Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt, Marilyn Monroe, Charles Lindbergh, and Cary Grant. Recently, the Fairmont has been visited by Denzel Washington, Sean Penn, President Bill Clinton, Paul Newman and Shaquille O'Neal.

In 1999, a private investment company, Maritz, Wolffe & Co., bought the Fairmont and conducted a multi-million dollar renovation which brought the historical hotel into the 21st century with modern accommodations, according to Travel Lady Magazine.
