Phentermine was first approved for use in humans in 1956 and was used in the combination drug Fen-phen. After the drug caused multiple cases of heart valve disease, the Fen-phen was taken off the market and the other ingredients of the drug were ordered off the market by the Food and Drug Administration. Phentermine was never banned by the FDA.
Minor side effects

According to the drug.com, phentermine can cause nervousness, headaches, dizziness, dry mouth tremors, insomnia, diarrhea, constipation and itching. Some patients reported a metallic taste in their mouth after taking the drug.

The FDA reports that some people can be allergic to phentermine and develop severe reactions including difficulty breathing and swelling of the lips, face and throat. In addition, the drug can cause swelling, rapid weight gain, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, confusion, dementia, dangerously high blood pressure, seizure and shortness of breath .
Medicinal Interactions

Drug.com indicates that phentermine can interfere with high blood pressure medication and insulin. In addition, many antidepressants can cause a reaction to phentermine, including Celexa, Lexapro, Prozac, Paxil, Elavil and Zoloft .

Because of its effects, the FDA has cautioned that people who have diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety disorder, glaucoma, epilepsy or thyroid conditions should not take phentermine.
Addiction and Other Warnings

Phentermine can be addictive, and because of this, it is not recommended for people with a history of addiction to drugs or alcohol. Because it can interfere with thinking ability, the FDA encourages patients not to drive until they are sure of its effects.
