Defensive Driving Facts

Defensive drivers are safe drivers. They use their turn signals, drive with their headlights on for increased visibility, and observe common sense rules, like not texting or applying make up while driving. However, these drivers observe some other rules to stay aware of their surroundings.

  1. Maintain a Safe Distance

    • Allow 2 to 3 seconds between you and the car in front of you. Allow more time with inclement weather or limited visibility.

    Scan the Road Ahead

    • Observe traffic conditions 20 to 30 seconds ahead of you so that you'll have as much reaction time as possible.

    Know Your Surroundings

    • Pay attention to other cars, bicycles and pedestrians near you. If you realize that you don't see a car anymore, it may be in your blind spot.

    Know Your Outs

    • If something happens, you should already know what options you have to stay safe, such as swerve, brake or accelerate.

    Don't Trust Other Drivers

    • Never assume that another driver will do what you expect. As you near another car, watch the front wheels, which will be the first sign that the car is changing directions.
