Types of Ultrasound Technicians

Ultrasound is an imaging modality that is used to image many parts of the body. The exams can sometimes be complex and require significant skill and experience. Some physicians hire ultrasound technicians that specialize in a certain field of medicine.

  1. Echocardiography

    • Echocardiographers specialize in cardiac sonography; examining the heart with ultrasound. They usually work for cardiologists.

    Breast

    • Sonographers who specialize in breast ultrasound are becoming more common as clinics that specialize in breast imaging strive to provide same day service for mammography and breast ultrasound.

    OB/Gyn

    • Many sonographers specialize in obstetric and gynecological ultrasound. These sonographers often become experienced in fertility studies. Some further specialize to work with only high-risk pregnancies and fetal echocardiography.

    Vascular

    • Vascular sonographers examine the blood vessels. Veins are examined for deep vein thrombosis and venous insufficiency. Arteries are examined for plague that may cause circulation problems in the arms and legs. The carotid arteries are examined when TIAs and strokes are of concern.

    Neurosonology

    • These sonographers use transcranial Doppler imaging to assess the blood vessels in the brain.

    Therapeutic Ultrasound

    • Therapeutic ultrasound is not used for imaging. It is a form of physical therapy. It can be used to treat scar tissue and increase blood flow. Ultrasound has a heating effect that cannot be felt by the patient.
