What Is a Volunteer Coordinator?

Volunteer coordinators work for non-profit associations, health care facilities, social service agencies and other organizations that need volunteers on a regular basis. Positions typically are either full-time or half-time, and sometimes a volunteer coordinator job includes the duties of special events coordinator.

  1. Recruitment and Training

    • Volunteer coordinators create descriptions of volunteer work that needs to be covered, recruit new volunteers through local media and community meetings and hold training sessions.

    Volunteer Meetings

    • Regular meetings with volunteers typically are conducted by volunteer coordinators to discuss upcoming events and ongoing needs. At a humane society, for example, volunteers might be needed for dog walking, cat socializing, front desk reception and for a fund-raising event.

    Supervisory Duties

    • Volunteer coordinators act as supervisors for all volunteers and serve as the liaison between volunteers and paid staff.

    Record Keeping

    • These coordinators maintain a database of volunteers, their duties and their hours of work. They may administer a rewards program where volunteers logging a certain number of hours or participating in a large event receive a gift certificate from a restaurant or store.

    Reports

    • Volunteer coordinators create reports for management and recommend changes that would be beneficial for the volunteer program.
