What Is a Veterinary Assistant?

Veterinary assistants perform clerical and cleaning tasks, and assist with basic animal care. Most work at veterinary clinics and animal hospitals. These jobs generally are low-paying and do not require education beyond high school. With further education, a vet assistant can advance to a veterinary technician position.

  1. Clerical Tasks

    • Veterinary assistants greet clients at the front desk, perform data entry on the computer, create invoices and take payments. They also answer the phone and schedule appointments.

    Cleaning Duties

    • These employees clean exam rooms, clean and sterilize surgery areas, and sterilize surgical equipment. They also may clean cages and other holding areas.

    Basic Pet Care

    • Veterinary assistants provide basic care for animals, including feeding them and walking dogs, and sometimes bathing pets. They change bedding, and may be responsible for some kennel cleaning.

    Examination Assistance

    • Before examinations, a veterinary assistant may record information from the owner. During examinations and other procedures such as blood draws, veterinary assistants restrain and hold pets.

    Technical Responsibilities

    • Experienced veterinary assistants and those in small or rural clinics often do more technical work, directly assisting the veterinarian. They might draw blood, conduct basic laboratory diagnostics and monitor vital signs during surgery.
