Arthritis Symptoms in Lupus

Lupus is an autoimmune disease with common arthritic type symptoms. Although there are various forms of lupus, symptoms such as joint pain, weight change, fever, skin problems and light sensitivity seem to be common to each type. However, every case of lupus is different.

  1. Joint Pain

    • Joint pain is usually the first arthritic symptom in lupus, consisting of stiffness and joints that are painful to touch. Joint pain can be symmetrical, where pain is consistent on both sides of the body.

    High Fever

    • Common in rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of arthritis, fever is also an early symptom of lupus. However, fever is normally accompanied by other symptoms as well.

    Swelling and Fluid Retention

    • Fluid retention and swelling is a major arthritic symptom, and can be common with lupus because of kidney dysfunctions. As a result, hands and feet may swell.

    Skin Problems

    • Skin rashes are common in lupus as well as rheumatoid arthritis. Skin may also become sore and scabby, leaving red and/or purple spots all over the body.

    Light Sensitivity

    • Arthritis sufferers tend to have sensitive eyes, thus making exposure to light painful, as well as with lupus. It can also cause skin rashes.

    Weight Change

    • Sudden and dramatic weight loss can occur when lupus is flaring, which is commonly seen in arthritis.
