Diagnosis of Sharp Intense Abdominal Pain

At some point in their lives nearly everyone feels the agony of sharp, intense abdominal pain. However, the National Institutes of Health suggests that finding the proper diagnosis is not always easy. There are many circumstances that cause abdominal pain.

Gas

While unusual, gas does occasionally cause very intense pain throughout the abdomen. If the pain travels all around the abdomen, then gas is the most likely culprit.

Digestive Problems

Irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, chronic constipation, diarrhea, lactose intolerance and food allergies can all cause abdominal pain at different points along the digestive tract.

Ulcer

A peptic ulcer is an erosion of the lining of the digestive tract. The University of Maryland Medical Center claims that the pain felt can be very intense and is often felt in waves surrounding your eating habits.

Gallbladder

Conditions like Cholecystitis or gallstones cause the gallbladder to become inflamed. This will frequently result in a very sharp and intense abdominal pain.

Appendicitis

According to the University of Texas, pain that radiates from the belly button and accompanies digestive problems may indicate appendicitis. If appendicitis is suspected, it is important to see a physician immediately.
