Auto Insurance Laws in Texas

Driving a vehicle requires responsibility. In the state of Texas, drivers are required by law to have proof of financial ability to pay in the form of insurance.

    Liability Insurance

  1. Liability is the minimum insurance requirement for those seeking to obtain a Texas driver's license. This covers the other party's expenses in an accident, and some liability policies will even cover your attorney fees.
  2. Additional Coverage

  3. According to the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI), additional options include medical coverage, personal injury protection and uninsured motorist insurance. Other options are collision, comprehensive, towing, labor and rental coverage.
  4. SR 22

  5. Drivers who lose their license due to lack of insurance, alcohol related accidents, or other serious infractions are required to carry SR 22 insurance for at least two years. SR 22 policies require that the insurance company certify coverage to the Texas Department of Public Safety, as noted on its site.
  6. TAIPA

  7. The Texas Automobile Insurance Plan Association allows drivers who are high risk due to numerous tickets, accidents to obtain liability insurance. The TDI site states that drivers must first be rejected by at least two insurance companies to obtain TAIPA.
  8. Bill of Consumer Rights

  9. According to the TDI, the Bill of Rights for Automobile Insurance protects consumers from unlawful insurance company practices. Consumers must meet obligations regarding their auto insurance in order to be completely covered by the Bill of Rights.
