What Is a Good Diet for IBS?

IBS, also known as irritable bowel syndrome, can cause symptoms such as abdominal cramping, diarrhea and constipation. The symptoms of IBS can often be treated with dietary changes.

  1. Diarrhea Triggers

    • People with IBS should limit their intake of alcohol, caffeine and high calorie foods. These foods may trigger diarrhea.

    Gas Inducing Foods

    • Foods such as broccoli and beans should be avoided, as they can produce gas and cause stomach pains.

    Food Preparation

    • People with IBS should avoid deep frying or pan frying food in oil. Instead, food should be baked, grilled, or steamed.

    Spicy Foods

    • Some people with IBS find that spicy foods induce cramping and/or diarrhea.

    Lifestyle

    • People with IBS should get regular exercise, eat a diet high in fiber and drink six to eight glasses of water each day.
