About Monster Truck Tires
Monster trucks often stand 11 feet tall and are equipped with engines pushing 1,500 horsepower. What monster trucks are most notable for are their massive tires.
-
Size
-
Most monster trucks use agricultural tires designed for D-12 Cats. The most common size used are 63 inches tall and 43 inches wide.
Price
-
Monster truck owners for the most part buy Goodyear or Firestone tires. The price tag on these tires comes to around $1,800 each.
-
Weight
-
When tires are bought for a monster truck, they are often too heavy. There is not a large market for monster truck tires, so tire companies do not build the perfect monster truck tire. The tires monster trucks use have to be shaved of excess weight. A tire usually weighs around 1,000 pounds and must be shaved to around 850 pounds for peak performance.
Shaving
-
The shaving process for a monster truck tires is usually done by hand. A large razor is used to trim off excess weight. The tread of the tire is shaved down by about 1 1/4 inch. This shaves about 160 pounds off each tire.
New Method
-
A Goodyear dealer in Indiana has designed a new tire-cutting machine that can shave monster truck tires to a given size in about 3 hours. The machine had to be modified from a retreading machine designed for regular-size tires.
