Marine Corp Beliefs & Traditions

Like other cultural customs, Marine Corps beliefs and traditions have grown out of the seed of history. To any Marine, the heritage of the military branch is crucial; Marines take pride in the distinguishing mark of the Eagle, Globe and Anchor and they remain connected to every man and woman who has ever worn the same insignia. In fact, Marine Corps beliefs and traditions are so integral to morale that they are often more than simple customs: They are regulated, written directives that must be upheld, and embraced, like any other Marine Corps duty.

    "Marines' Hymn"

  1. The "Marines' Hymn" is more than a song; when the music starts, all Marines present must stand and remain standing during the song's entirety.
  2. Officers Last

  3. Unlike in other military branches, Marine Corps officers truly look out for their men; it is customary for officers to stand last in line at the mess hall to ensure that all of their enlisted men have been fed first.
  4. Nautical Terms

  5. In homage to its years as a seafaring force, the Marine Corps relies heavily on nautical terms to direct everyday life, including "scuttle-but" (drinking fountain) and "head" (bathroom).
  6. Marine Corps' Birthday

  7. Since 1921, the Marine Corps has celebrated its birthday on Nov. 10 with readings from the Marine Corps manual, messages from the commandant and even birthday cake.
  8. Serenading the Commandant

  9. Every New Year's morning since the Civil War, the Marine Band has serenaded the commandant in his quarters in exchange for a breakfast of hot buttered rum.
  10. Loyalty

  11. Semper fidelis (always faithful) is more than a motto; it is an esprit de corps unknown to any other branch of the armed forces, a love of the Corps that every Marine carries with him from the moment he enters boot camp to the moment he dies. Men and women do not simply join the Marine Corps; they become the Marine Corps.
