Who Invented the Jeep Wrangler?

The Jeep Wrangler is a classic that's easily recognizable throughout the world. Although some things about it have changed in appearance over the years, it remains true to form to its original style from the 1940s.

Willys MB

From 1941 to 1945, Willys manufactured what was later known as the Jeep Wrangler. This is referred to as the World War II Jeep.

Willys Civilian CJ

Willys made its civilian model for consumers in the 1950s. It had a steady following but was ultimately undone when Chrysler retooled the idea.

Chrysler's YJ

Chrysler took over the production of the Jeep in 1987, introducing the YJ. This model offered newer features such as a wider wheelbase and an updated suspension.

The Jeep TJ

The Jeep TJ was introduced in 1997. It paid homage to the original Willys model with rounded headlamps instead of square ones, as in the previous YJ.

Fun Fact

With increased popularity, a right-handed version was manufactured for overseas enthusiasts. Also, this version was offered to U.S. postal workers and came with an automatic transmission.

Jeep JK

The Jeep Wrangler has seen its most advanced changes since 2007. Although still clearly a Wrangler by its looks, four-door versions are now offered. Even the two-door versions are wider and larger than the older TJ models.
