What Flowers Grow in Clay?

Clay soil can be a challenge to gardeners. It drains poorly, compacts easily and lacks organic matter. It can be amended to improve its texture and drainage, but there are some hardy flowers that will grow in clay soils without much fuss. Many of them make excellent cut flowers.   1. Echinacea

    • Echinacea is available in a variety of colors, but purple is the most common. Echinacea actually improves clay soil by loosening its structure, and birds love the seed heads.

    Lariope

    • Lariope looks like a thick-bladed grass. It spreads freely, making it an excellent ground cover. Lariope gets purple to pink flowers in the spring.

    Shasta Daisy

    • Shasta daisies are a larger version of common daisies. They're in the mum family, and are very insect resistant.

    Rudbeckia

    • Also known as black-eyed susan, rudbekia is a tough, drought-resistant flower. It grows well in clay soil. As an added bonus, it is deer resistant.

    Daylilies

    • Excellent for naturalizing, daylilies will spread quickly to cover slopes and neglected areas. The most common variety is orange-colored, but other colors are also available. The flowers last just one day.

    Coreopsis

    • A low-growing yellow flower with bright green, fern-like foliage, coreopsis, or tickseed, will spread happily in clay soil. It requires little care and is highly deer resistant.
