Facts on Steriod Use in Youth Sports

Steroid use is not limited to professional athletes. Studies have shown that high school athletes turn to steroids to gain physical advantages. Although steroid use among high school students has slightly diminished in recent years, it still remains a core issue in youth athletics.

  1. Statistics

    • A national survey conducted by the University of Michigan in 2008 revealed that 2.2% of high school seniors admitted to using steroids. This is down from 3.5% in 2003.

    Demographics

    • In the United States, Caucasian students are more likely to use steroids than those of other races, and boys are more likely to use steroids than girls.

    Effects

    • Steroid use can cause acne, mood swings, infertility, male-pattern baldness in both genders and testicular shrinkage. If taken during puberty, steroids can also lead to stunted growth.

    State Testing

    • Florida, Illinois, New Jersey and Texas have randomly tested their high school athletes for steroid use. Florida discontinued its testing program in 2008.

    Test Effectiveness

    • State testing of high school athletes is expensive, and results indicate that many tests are ineffective. Each test costs up to $200, yet only .06% have yielded positive results.
