What Is Chemotherapy Used For?

According to the American Cancer Society, chemotherapy refers to using drugs or medicines to treat cancer. There are more than 100 types of drugs used for chemotherapy.

    • When chemotherapy drugs are administered, the drugs work throughout the entire body to kill cancer cells.

    Form

    • Chemotherapy can be given in pill form or injected into the veins through an IV. It can also be injected as a shot.

    Types

    • Most chemotherapy treatments consist of more than one drug. The type of drugs used in the chemotherapy treatment depends on how widespread the cancer is, the age of the patient, and where the cancer is in the body.

    Side Effects

    • The side effects of chemotherapy can include hair loss, fatigue, dry skin, vomiting and organ damage.

    Time Frame

    • Chemotherapy treatments are usually given until there are no more cancer cells spreading throughout the body. Sometimes the drugs are given once a week for several weeks, while some people are only given one round of chemotherapy drugs.
