As a web designer, you take on a client, who entrusts you to prepare a website for the World Wide Web. You must design the site with the appropriate designs that coincide with the core of the client's business.
The Process

Your may be involved in the initial meetings with the client. You will discuss the site layout, illustrations, pictures, and videos to be used, plus the colors that should be displayed on the site. Some clients know exactly what they want; others don't. In the case of the latter, you will create a site based on the client's perception.

Once the basic concept is formed, you receives the data (text and/or images) that will be displayed on the site. You must then convert these data using the proper language so they are viewable. To do this, you must have a solid working knowledge of HTML (hypertext markup language). The website may have other features, such as clickable email contacts. A good knowledge of FTP (file transfer protocol) and any other program that enables these features is also necessary.

Although a two- or four-year degree is helpful in becoming a web designer, it is not a prerequisite. Many successful web designers have taught themselves HTML or have apprenticed with a skilled person. However, designers depend on graphic softwares such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Adobe Illustrator to assist in web layouts. As of 2009, starting projected yearly earnings were estimated as: company employee, $42,000; freelancer, $28,000; nonprofit, $40,000; private practice, $37,000; government (federal), $59,000; government (state), $39,000; university, $41,000; and school district, $41,000.
