What Is a Cherry Picker?
As the name suggests, cherry pickers were first designed for use in fruit orchards to enable workers to reach fruit on the entire tree, including the fruit at the very top. Cherry picking equipment consisted of a boom with an enclosed box for the worker to stand in while gathering fruit.

Size
-
Note that cherry pickers are made in different sizes to accommodate their particular function. Small cherry pickers are made as engine hoists to make the mechanic's job much easier when removing engines from cars on which he is working. Cherry pickers are also known as basket cranes, boom lifts and hydraladders.
Windows
-
Washing windows on tall buildings or tenement apartment buildings is easier when a cherry picker is used to help wash the top set of windows. There is a safety feature on most cherry pickers that won't allow them to tip over while in operation.

Linemen
-
Cherry pickers are used by linemen all over the United States to repair and work on overhead power lines in relatively safe conditions. Linemen work in all weather and, like the operator on the ground, the lineman has a second set of controls to enable better positioning of himself to complete work projects.
Telephones
-
Servicemen working for the telephone networks across America often use cherry pickers to complete tasks while working on utility poles.
Cable TV
-
Cable television repairmen use cherry pickers to move around freely while setting cable television lines. Levers within the bucket in which the cable man is suspended can be moved and adjusted according to his needs.
