The Side Effects of Nux Vomica

Nux Vomica comes from a native tree of Asia called Strychnos nux-vomica, whose dried, ripe seeds can be used as homeopathy treatments. Some of the conditions treated by Nux Vomica include back pain, colds, allergies, emotional stress, hemorrhoids, menstrual problems, headaches and digestive problems. A common homeopathic medicine, Nux Vomica, can have serious side effects.

Side Effects

Nux Vomica predominantly has neurological side effects, such as painful seizures, spasms and dizziness. Difficulty breathing, confusion, muscle cramps, pain and tenderness are also known side effects of this natural remedy.

Physical Side Effects

Some of the physical reactions caused by Nux Vomica intake include limb muscles, muscle pain, numbness, hyperreflexia, knee-jerks, tiredness and hyperventilation. The mentioned side effects occur more often when a multi-herbal supplement containing Nux Vomica is taken.

Painful Seizures

Nux Vomica can cause painful seizures within 15 minutes of ingesting, or 5 minutes after inhalation. Patients with seizure disorders should use Nux Vomica cautiously.

Pregnancy and Children Warning

Nux Vomica should not be taken during pregnancy or when breast-feeding due to the risk of ingesting toxic levels of strychnine. Children, under the age of eighteen, should never take Nux Vomica due to potential toxicity and even death.

Drug Warning

Nux Vomica can have bad interactions with other medicines, even prescription drugs. Individuals mixing anti-psychotic medication and Nux Vomica can have poisoning-like symptoms.

Intake Warning

Nux Vomica should be taken in pill or powder forms, and never by taking seeds by mouth. The seeds may contain toxic amounts of strychnine.
