What Is Glycolic Acid Compound?

Glycolic acid is a chemical also known as alpha hydroxy acid, or fruit acid. Since it comes from sugar cane, this acidic compound is actually considered to be a natural product. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cosmetic Uses

    • Glycolic acid is an ingredient in cosmetic products and is used to exfoliate and moisturize skin. While this acid is used in many cosmetic products, there is debate within the industry as to whether it is safe or even effective.

    Chemical Peels

    • Glycolic acid is also used in chemical peels, with concentrations as high as 50 percent; most other cosmetic products contain 10 percent.

    Additional Cosmetic Benefits

    • In addition to removing dead skin cells, glycolic acid draws moisturizers to the freshly exfoliated area.

    Sensitivity to Sun

    • Cosmetic products that contain glycolic acid can cause an individual's skin to be extremely sensitive to sunlight; sunscreen is recommended after exfoliating.

    Industrial Uses

    • Glycolic acid is also used as a grease and rust remover; these products often contain high concentrations (normally 70 percent or more) and should never be used on the skin.
