Mucinex expectorant, or guaifenesin, is an over-the-counter medication used to relieve coughs associated with upper respiratory tract infections. Though effective and safe, it does have some side effects.

    • The common side effects of Mucinex, when they do occur, are stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and drowsiness.

    • The more serious reactions to Mucinex are usually allergic reactions to its ingredients.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Severe allergic reactions to Mucinex can include severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, face, tongue and throat itching and swelling, and a rash. Mucinex reactions can also include increased blood pressure, body aches and rapid heartbeat.
