What Qualifications Are Needed in Practical Nursing?

Licensed practical nurses provide limited care for patients in hospitals, nursing homes and doctor's offices. They are supervised by registered nurses and physicians while caring for patients. The requirements for becoming a licensed practical nurse vary from state to state, but you can expect to follow a similar career path anywhere in the United States.

High School

At minimum, licensed practical nurses will be expected to have a high school diploma or a GED before entering the profession.

Further Study

To become a licensed practical nurse, you'll have to complete a state-approved nursing program at a college or through a vocational school. Program requirements will include classroom instruction and hands-on practice.

State Licensure

Each state will have a different licensing procedure for licensed practical nurses; check with your state for forms, fees and processes. You will have to pass a national exam called the NCLEX-PN before you begin working.

Continuing Education and Licenses

States may require ongoing education to keep a practical nursing license. Additionally, your license may need to be renewed with the state periodically.

Alternate Job Titles

Licensed practical nurses, or LPNs, are sometimes called licensed vocational nurses.
