Ski wax at its basic level is a hydrocarbon wax, not unlike paraffin. Basic waxes can be used to protect the ski in the off-season, clean the base of the ski of dirt or prepare the ski to receive another coat of wax. These waxes are perfectly suitable for alpine skiing, snowboarding and glide zones of a Nordic ski. Hydrocarbon waxes are the staple of a good wax kit.
Fluorocarbon Waxes

Some waxes contain fluorocarbons in addition to the hydrocarbon base. Fluorocarbons are a better lubricant than hydrocarbons, but can damage the base structure. This is why fluorocarbon removers are sold at ski shops and direct from manufacturers.

Certain types of ski wax also use graphite as a lubricant. These waxes are designed for warmer weather and reduces water based drag.
Other Waxes

Other waxes are petroleum jelly based or microwax. Microwax is harder than standard paraffin-based waxes. Petroleum jelly is much softer.

Teflon can be used as a wax alternative. Teflon provides excellent water resistance and can be used with or without traditional ski wax. Zardoz is the primary manufacturer of Teflon lubricants for skis.
