What Is Geothermal Power?

There is a great deal of energy to be tapped underneath the Earth. This energy, known as geothermal energy or geothermal power, is used today to generate 0.3 percent of the world's electricity need. It is a highly sustainable and environmentally-friendly form of natural power that is not utilized enough. Still, many scientists are looking for more ways to employ it in order to curb the effects and lessen the impact of global warming.

  1. Identification

    • Geothermal power is created by direct heat sources that have become concentrated in various cracks and pockets in the earth; it is naturally seen in hot springs and geysers.

    Environmental Impact

    • Geothermal power is much more environmentally-friendly than fossil fuels, producing less greenhouse gas; it is also a natural, renewable source, whereas fossil fuels eventually run out.

    Geography

    • Until recently, geothermal power has been localized in parts of the world where the highest concentration of geothermal energy is found.

    Geothermal Electricity

    • Twenty-four different countries use geothermal power to create electricity. Though the amount they use is small, it will grow as technology allows for better harvesting of geothermal power.

    Geothermal Heating

    • Geothermal heating is one example of geothermal power. Here, the heat from the earth is used for direct heating of homes, spas and various industrial applications.
