How Long Are You Contagious With Ringworm?

Ringworm is an infection on the skin which is caused by a fungus that lives and grows on the top layer of the skin. Ringworm typically grows in a circle or ring formation on different parts of the body such as the face, legs, torso or arms.

  1. Types

    • There are a couple of different types of ringworm. Ringworm which grows in the groin area is referred to as jock itch and ringworm that grows on the feet is known as athlete's foot.

    Identification

    • Ringworm is diagnosed when a person has a ring-shaped rash on the skin. In other cases, the ringworm appears as a red, itchy rash. To be sure, your doctor may take a skin sample to identify the fungus in order to provide the proper treatment.

    Misconceptions

    • Contrary to the name of the condition, ringworm is not caused by a worm nor does a worm live inside the ring-shaped rash.

    Treatment

    • Ringworm can be treated with over-the-counter medicated creams. In severe cases, your doctor will prescribe pills to kill the fungus or antibiotics if the rash has become infected.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To prevent ringworm, people should avoid sharing clothing, sheets, towels or sports equipment. If athletes have skin-to-skin contact during sports, they should wash thoroughly afterward and wear sandals in public shower facilities where applicable.
