What Does the Data Bus Do in a Microprocessor?

Providing transportation for data flow, the bus and its working speed are important to the overall workings of the computer system.

  1. Function

    • Just like the motorized vehicles with the same name, computer buses transport data to flow to and from devices in a computer.

    Significance

    • All computer devices have different needs, "timings" or "latency," which is how often they must have contact with the processor to remain stable and ready to work. It's in the bus that these rules are set and made sure to be followed.

    Misconceptions

    • Computer devices today prioritize more on their own, and since it takes longer to process data than it takes to send it, a processor can run at much higher speeds than the bus does, while still not clogging the system.

    Considerations

    • Branded computers have, in most cases, a perfectly balanced selection of hardware and software configurations. Unless several devices are to be upgraded, exchanging the motherboard simply to get a faster bus speed isn't profitable to gain performance.

    To Build or Buy

    • In pre-built computers, a balanced performance is part of the manufacturer's job. For custom-built computers, it's more important to use devices that work well together than to go by bus speed.
