Oral Treatment of Scabies

Several medications exist to treat scabies, a contagious, itchy rash caused by a tiny mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. Ivermectin, an oral medication, is an effective treatment that can be used instead of messy cream remedies.

Brand Name

Stromectol is the brand name for ivermectin, a broad-spectrum, antiparasitic medication.

Usage

To treat scabies orally, the CDC recommends a single 200 mcg/kg of body weight tablet of ivermectin, followed by one more dose after two weeks. Take this medication by mouth, with water, on an empty stomach.

Side Effects

Ivermectin may cause nausea, bloating, diarrhea, mild abdominal pain, lightheadedness, headache or muscle pain. If any of these side effects get worse or last longer than seven days, consult your doctor immediately.

Precautions

Consult your doctor before you take this medication if you are allergic to ivermectin or have other allergies; are asthmatic; have liver disease; have an immune disorder; if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant; or if you are breastfeeding.

Warnings

Ivermectin may cause dizziness or drowsiness; do not drive or operate heavy machinery when you have taken your dose of the medication. Limit your alcohol consumption.
