Types of Knowledge Management

The goal of knowledge management is to continually improve a business' operational processes. The different types of knowledge management can be used to accommodate different management needs. Best methods for knowledge management vary from business to business and no method is all inclusive.

  1. Push Strategy

    • The push strategy involves continually gathering information from employees and collecting it into one large data base or repository; this information is then used to find new and improved ways of doing business.

    Pull Strategy

    • The pull strategy utilizes outside experts when the management team recognizes a need for improvement; at this point, management understands what areas need improvement, but the expert gives specific instructions on how to do it.

    Competence Management

    • Competence management is a continual testing and labeling of employees skills, allowing management to recognize areas of strength in the work force.

    Databases

    • Database knowledge management is the creation of repositories of information, gathered in any fashion, for use in data mining and reference.

    Master-Apprentice Relationship

    • The master-apprentice relationship strategy recognizes an employee's expertise and allows the apprentice to learn under the master.
