Problems With Social Security Disability

Not many will willingly dispute the fact that the Social Security Disability program that is in place in the United States is without flaw. There are numerous problems with the system for a variety of reasons. The fault of these problems lies with both those that file claims as well as the ones who process and decide upon them.

Layoffs

One of the problems that the Social Security Disability program faces is a cutback on the number of state examiners. This is backlogging an already overflowed system, causing even further delays in processing claims.

Fraud

There has been so much fraud intertwined in the Social Security Disability program that it must prove that each applicant is not deceitful. These delays makes it very difficult for many people to rely on the system that is in place.

Consistency

There is a lack of consistency in how cases are evaluated and processed. The evaluations are all subjective and there is little discipline, so each case, even if it has the same criteria, can be decided upon differently.

Time Frame

Because the system has so many faults, once a person files a claim, the process often lasts for years before a decision is made and any money is disbursed. This causes more people to overload the welfare system, file bankruptcy and to go into foreclosure.

Alternatives

Many people are quick to exit the workforce due to disability because they know of no other alternatives. They system is geared more towards proving that disabled people cannot work when it should be more focused on rehabilitating people so they can continue to work.
