A bay window is a type of window installed in a home to create an illusion of space. Smaller rooms or homes have often incorporated them for this reason. San Francisco, for example, is a city that is notorious for its limited space. Bay windows are also a staple of the architecture of that city. One type of bay window is called the bow window.

  1. Bow windows are composed of 4 or more casement windows that form a curve. These windows are tall rectangles that open outward on a hinge.

  3. Bow windows are placed in a home to bring in more natural light and to widen a space. They also allow great views to the outside.

  5. Bow windows first began being constructed in the 18th century. They were primarily found in the United Kingdom; though some time later they became popular in the United States as well.

  7. Modern bow windows typically were put in during the 1970s and 1980s. During this time, the windows found a resurgence of popularity.

  9. One of the most popular examples of early bow windows is found in London, England, at White's Gentleman's Club, which was built in 1693.
