How Long Does It Take to Become an Art Teacher?

Becoming an art teacher allows you to impart your knowledge and passion of art--or make a little cash on the side while you launch your career. There are several paths you can take in order to teach art.

The Traditional Method

Most teachers become certified by earning a bachelor's degree in education from an accredited college of education. This usually takes about four years. Earning a bachelor's degree will allow you to teach grades one through high school. Although you can specialize in one artistic discipline, you will have to become well-versed in all aspects of art.

The Not-So-Traditional Method

Many states, such as Florida, allow anyone with a bachelor's degree to become a teacher as long as she passes a basic test in her subject area. This test includes questions about art techniques, mediums and history. Contact your state's department of education for more information on the testing and schooling requirements for your particular area.

The Apprentice System

Find burgeoning artists who are willing to pay you to share some of your experience. They can work side by side with you, and they are provided with your specific insight. Try advertising in your local newspaper, art stores or schools for students.

Art Professor

If you have a master's degree in art, you can also try contacting your local colleges or universities to see if they are hiring professors in you particular art discipline. This will allow you to work with a higher talent level. Getting your bachelor's and master's degrees usually will take you six to eight years, depending on which schools you attend and how many classes you take at a time.
