What Is a USB Adapter Used for?

Universal Serial Bus technology, or USB for short, was introduced in 1995 with the intention of connecting computers. As the format caught on, USB technology was no longer limited to computer connectivity. Unfortunately, USB connectivity is still not standard in many devices, so adapters are needed to plug certain devices into USB ports.

Digital Cameras

While many newer computers feature compact flash card readers, those who use older computers plug USB adapters into cameras for instant USB transfer of photographs.

Musical Instruments

For easier PC recording, many musicians use USB adapters to plug instruments directly into computers. In the past, adapters were the only way to utilize USB technology with musical instruments, but companies like Behringer have recently released instruments that offer onboard USB connection without adapter usage.

DVD Players

USB adapters are sold for DVD connection, allowing PC users to play DVDs on computers even without built-in DVD drives.

Headphones

For computers lacking onboard headphone jacks, adapters allow for instant USB connection.

Microphones

USB adapters allow for external microphone connection. Most computers have built-in 1/8-inch microphone jacks, but adapters allow users to connect microphones of other sizes via USB ports.

Mini USB Devices

Some devices, such as cell phones and camcorders, use mini USB cables, and special adapters are needed to convert to standard USB plug-ins.
